Deep Soil Mixing | Still Creek Works Yard

Project Description

Soil-mixed ground improvement was designed as the foundation for two new buildings at the Still Creek Works Yard site. The design intent of the ground improvement is to transfer vertical loads into competent soils and to provide lateral resistance during an earthquake.

Soil mixed ground improvement was designed as the foundation for two new buildings at the Still Creek Works Yard site. The design intent of the ground improvement is to transfer vertical loads into component soils and to provide lateral resistance during an earthquake.

Soil conditions in the Still Creek area are generally aggregate fills over highly organic fills (hog fuel) over highly organic soils (peat) over soft silty clay over till.

In order to achieve the required improved soil strength a high concentration of cement was mixed into the organic soils while a lower concentration was mixed into the silty clay.

During soil mixing the grout injection rate and mixing parameters were monitored by the operator and recorded on a computer. Quality Assurance and Quality Control were performed by reviewing data output from the computer and testing DSM wet samples and DSM core samples.

DSM samples were collected using a down-hole wet sampler and by core sampling. Along with UCS test, tensile and elastic modulus testing was also performed on these samples. The contract was performed successfully on schedule and on budget.

Scope of work

  • Mobilization, sediment control, deep soil mixing and spoils removal
  • Triple Axis Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) columns were constructed using an ABI 24m mobilram
  • 740 13-15m deep DSM triple column panels were installed 0.3m into till
  • DSM column diameter was 0.91m overlapping at 0.61m on center.
  • DSM unconfined compressive strength of approximately 3 MPa was required and achieved.
