Surrey Civic Center

Project Description

The project included construction of the new Surrey Civic Centre and Municipal Hall, on the corner of 104th Street and University Boulevard. The new building is to be incorporated into the newly-built Surrey Library, which completed construction one month after the excavation began on the adjacent Civic Centre.

The excavation contractor was B&B Contracting. Excavations began in August of 2011. The installation of 350 secant piles began at the same time and took four months to complete. The anchoring of the secant piles and shotcrete shoring began in September, and followed behind the secant installations once the concrete achieved strength of 5MPa.

One of the challenges for this project was poor ground condition, comprised of wet organic peat over clay until firm till at 25ft depth in the northeast corner, diminishing toward the southwest.

Other challenges included utilities and services that were not removed off the site until later in the year and required excavation to begin in the opposite side of the site from our anticipated start area.

The project remained on schedule because of innovative thinking on the part of the construction team of Southwest Contracting and B&B.
